Study Visit in the Klaipėda Region Explores Workation Opportunities

As part of the Interreg South Baltic project Laptops and Lighthouses (LAL), a study visit was organised in the Klaipėda region, Lithuania, bringing together project partners to explore how existing infrastructure and local assets can support the development of workation tourism. During the visit, representatives from the EUCC Baltic Office and Kiviks Museum (Sweden) visited a range of urban, rural, and nature-based locations, gaining valuable insights into different workation environments.

The programme included visits to the Klaipėda Public Library, coworking space Švyturys UP, the Seaside Regional Park Visitor Centre, the Dutchman’s Cap coastal cliff, and Kretingalė municipality. These locations demonstrated how public infrastructure, private initiatives, natural landscapes, and local communities can complement each other in creating attractive conditions for remote workers and longer stays.

The study visit highlighted the importance of offering diverse workation environments to meet the needs of different target groups. While the public library showcased a quiet and inclusive workspace suitable for focused work, Švyturys UP presented a vibrant coworking environment combining productivity and social interaction. Meanwhile, visits to natural and rural areas demonstrated the growing importance of nature, well-being, and authentic local experiences within the workation concept.

Discussions with local stakeholders also opened opportunities for future cooperation and the development of new initiatives. The exchange of experiences inspired new ideas among project partners and reinforced the value of study visits as a tool for knowledge transfer, innovation, and strengthening cross-border cooperation.

The visit confirmed that the Klaipėda region has strong potential to support year-round, sustainable tourism by integrating remote work opportunities with cultural, natural, and community-based experiences. It also provided valuable insights for the continued development of the LAL project and future workation initiatives across the South Baltic region.
